General Guideline Principles for Spinal
Cord Programs for workers compensation patients

The New York State workers compensation board has developed these guidelines to help physicians, podiatrists, and other healthcare professionals provide appropriate treatment for Spinal Cord Programs.

These Workers Compensation Board guidelines are intended to assist healthcare professionals in making decisions regarding the appropriate level of care for their patients with ankle and foot disorders.

The guidelines are not a substitute for clinical judgement or professional experience. The ultimate decision regarding care must be made by the patient in consultation with his or her healthcare provider.

Spinal Cord Programs

Select patients with severe spinal cord impairment get integrated, case-management, and coordinated treatment from the spinal cord structure of care.

The system consists of an outpatient component and an inpatient component housed in a facility with a hospital licence. Each element supports the served individuals’ active involvement and autonomy throughout the whole program.

The spinal cord structure of care also offers important elements of care that address the needs of the people it serves throughout their lifetimes, or formally links with them.

This might incorporate any of its components or a highly organised program with a team approach. The multidisciplinary team should, at a minimum, include a case manager, occupational therapist, physical therapist, psychologist, rehabilitation RN, doctor, and therapeutic recreation expert in addition to a skilled medical chairman who is board certified and experienced in rehabilitation.

The team may also include a speech-language pathologist, social worker, respiratory therapist, or rehabilitation counsellor as necessary.

The length of any spinal cord program should be decided depending on the severity of the patient’s damage and the physician in charge of rehabilitation’s judgement.
