History

Orient is a community and census-designated place (CDP) situated in Suffolk County on Long Island, New York, USA. According to the 2010 census, the population of this CDP was 743 individuals.

It’s important to note that “Orient” and “Orient Point” are often used interchangeably. However, “Orient Point” specifically denotes the geographical point situated at the tip of the North Fork of Long Island, while “Orient” refers to the actual hamlet where this point is located.

Orient, situated at the easternmost tip of Long Island’s North Fork, has a rich history tied to its original name, Poquatuck, after the local Native American tribe, and later as Oyster Ponds due to the abundant nearby oyster beds.

The area now known as Orient, along with neighboring East Marion, was initially called Oysterponds because of the plentiful shellfish in the region.

At that time, Orient was referred to as Lower Neck, and East Marion was known as Upper Neck. In 1836, the communities separated, and East Marion was named after Revolutionary War General Francis Marion, renowned as the Swamp Fox. The addition of “East” was to differentiate it from another Marion elsewhere in the state.

The name Orient was chosen to signify its position as the easternmost point on the North Fork. An anecdote suggests that the name change occurred when Oyster Bay, New York gained fame during Teddy Roosevelt’s presidency, prompting Orient’s renaming to match its most notable geographical feature, Orient Point.

During the summer months, Orient’s population swells to well over 1,000, while in winter, it’s considerably smaller. Apart from a post office, gas station, country store, and a few seasonal tourist stands, there is no central commercial hub in Orient.

Consequently, its residents rely on nearby Greenport for their everyday needs. Many in the community work at the United States Department of Agriculture lab on nearby Plum Island, just a brief boat ride from Orient Point across Plum Gut, or at businesses further west.

The region continues to support truck farming and commercial fishing industries. The architectural style of Orient reflects a distinct New England influence, with homes spanning the past three centuries. Locals humorously remark that a “new house” is any structure built since World War II.

Orient was initially settled by five families who received a land grant from the King of England in the 17th century. These families, with surnames like King, Terry, Glover, Latham, Tuthill, and Vail, continue to have descendants in the area.

During the American Revolution, Orient served as a base of operations for British commanders like Benedict Arnold and local Tories for conducting raids on Connecticut, with one of Arnold’s headquarters located in a tavern owned by the Vail family, now known as “Village Lane.” Many of the older structures in Orient are part of the Orient Historic District, listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1976.

For over a century, ferry services have connected Orient Point to southern New England. The Cross Sound Ferry currently provides vehicle and passenger ferry service between Orient Point and New London, Connecticut. Additionally, the service has expanded in recent years to include Sea Jet routes to Mohegan Sun and Foxwoods Casino.

 

Demographics

As of the 2000 census, the population of the CDP stood at 709 residents, residing in 330 households, with 205 families.

The population density was approximately 139.2 individuals per square mile (53.7/km2). There were 673 housing units, averaging about 132.2 per square mile (51.0/km2). The racial composition of the CDP was predominantly White at 97.32%, with smaller percentages representing African American, Asian, Pacific Islander, and other racial backgrounds. Hispanic or Latino residents accounted for 0.99% of the population.

In terms of household demographics, 18.5% had children under 18 living with them, and 52.7% were married couples residing together.

Additionally, 7.0% of households were headed by a female without a husband present, while 37.6% were non-family households. Approximately 30.3% of all households consisted of individuals, and 19.4% had residents aged 65 or older. On average, households had 2.15 members, while families had 2.69.

Age-wise distribution in the CDP was as follows: 18.1% of the population was under 18, 2.8% were between 18 and 24, 15.7% were between 25 and 44, 29.1% were between 45 and 64, and 34.4% were 65 or older. The median age was 54 years, indicating a relatively older population. For every 100 females, there were 95.9 males, and among females aged 18 and over, there were 91.1 males.

Regarding income levels, the median household income in the CDP was $45,461, with families reporting a median income of $50,833. Males had a median income of $43,571, while females reported a median income of $31,111.

The per capita income for the CDP was $29,382. About 2.4% of families and 4.4% of the population lived below the poverty line. None of those under 18 were below the poverty line, while 4.5% of residents aged 65 or older fell into this category.
