We are honored to offer a wide range of orthopedic services in the vicinity of Middle Island, NY:
Purpose: Hip replacement surgery is recommended for individuals facing hip joint damage caused by conditions such as osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, or fractures. The primary aim is to alleviate discomfort, restore mobility, and enhance overall quality of life.
Procedure: There are two primary types of hip replacements available—total hip replacement (THR) and partial hip replacement (hemiarthroplasty). THR involves replacing both the hip joint’s ball and socket, while hemiarthroplasty deals with the ball component only.
Implants: Typically, artificial hip joint components are crafted from materials like metal, plastic, or ceramic, chosen based on the patient’s age, activity level, and specific needs.
Recovery: Following the procedure, patients undergo physical therapy to regain strength and mobility, leading to reduced pain and improved hip function.
Purpose: Custom knee replacement offers a personalized approach to knee arthroplasty, ideal for individuals with severe knee pain or joint damage unresponsive to conservative treatments.
Procedure: Advanced imaging and computer modeling assess the patient’s knee anatomy before surgery, enabling the design of a custom-fitted knee implant tailored to their unique anatomy.
Benefits: Custom knee replacements often lead to improved alignment, stability, and reduced pain when compared to standard knee replacements.
Recovery: The recovery process involves physical therapy to regain knee strength and range of motion, typically resulting in reduced pain and improved knee function.
Definition: Avascular necrosis of the hip occurs when the blood supply to the hip bone’s femoral head is disrupted, resulting in the death of bone tissue.
Causes: This condition can result from factors such as trauma, prolonged corticosteroid use, excessive alcohol consumption, or specific medical conditions.
Treatment: Treatment options include medications for pain management and addressing underlying conditions. In advanced cases, surgical interventions like core decompression, bone grafting, or hip replacement may be necessary.
Purpose: This procedure addresses cervical myelopathy, characterized by spinal cord compression in the neck, with the aim of relieving pressure on the spinal cord.
Procedure: Surgeons access the spine from the posterior approach, removing any bone or tissue compressing the spinal cord and fusing adjacent vertebrae to stabilize the spine.
Recovery: Physical therapy may be necessary to regain strength and mobility, and the procedure can alleviate symptoms such as numbness, weakness, and difficulty walking.
Purpose: TLIF targets degenerative conditions of the lumbar spine, including disc degeneration, herniation, or spondylolisthesis.
Procedure: During TLIF, the surgeon removes the problematic disc, inserts bone graft material into the empty disc space, and utilizes hardware like screws and rods to fuse adjacent vertebrae.
Benefits: TLIF provides spinal stability, reduces pain, and can enhance overall function.
Purpose: ACDF is employed to treat cervical spine conditions such as herniated discs or spinal cord compression in the neck.
Procedure: The surgeon accesses the cervical spine from the anterior approach, removes the damaged disc, and fuses adjacent vertebrae using a bone graft to alleviate pressure on the spinal cord.
Recovery: This procedure can alleviate symptoms like neck pain, arm pain, and numbness.
Purpose: Lumbar fusion is recommended for conditions such as lumbar canal stenosis or adult scoliosis to provide spine stability.
Procedure: During lumbar fusion, two or more vertebrae are fused using bone grafts and hardware to reduce pain and improve spinal alignment.
Benefits: Lumbar fusion can offer relief from pain, weakness, and other symptoms associated with these conditions.
Purpose: Lumbar discectomy is performed to address herniated or damaged discs in the lumbar spine.
Procedure: The surgeon removes the portion of the disc pressing on nearby nerves, providing relief from pain and discomfort.
Recovery: Patients typically experience reduced leg pain and improved mobility following this procedure.

Middle Island is a hamlet and designated census area (CDP) located in Suffolk County, New York, within the Town of Brookhaven. The population recorded during the 2010 census stood at 10,483 residents.
Positioned between the hamlets of Coram to the west and Ridge to the east, Middle Island is also situated north of Rocky Point and south of Yaphank.
Its name is derived from its central location on Long Island, as it is approximately equidistant from the island’s eastern and western tips (Montauk Point and the East River) and midway between the northern and southern boundaries (the Long Island Sound and the Atlantic Ocean).
The history of Middle Island in the European-American context can be traced back to 1766 when the first Presbyterian church was constructed. Rev. David Rose, a pastor of the South Haven church who also practiced medicine, traveled on horseback to serve his extensive parish.
He carried Bibles and medical supplies in his saddlebags to tend to the needs of his congregation in the frontier setting. In the same year, the parish established a cemetery opposite the church.
Around this time, Jonathan Edwards, a veteran of the French and Indian War, took an interest in the white pine trees of Quebec and began planting their seedlings along what is now Middle Island-Miller Place Road. These pine trees became a notable feature of the community.
William Dayton, a local farmer, later obtained pine cones from the original plantings in 1812 and planted them on his farm south of what is currently Middle Country Road, near an area of Yaphank-Middle Island Road north of Longwood Road. This region, close to the William Davis farmstead, is now part of Prosser Pines and Cathedral Pines County Parks.
The first schoolhouse in Middle Island was constructed in 1813, situated east of the church. In 1837, a new church was built behind the older one, serving the community for two centuries until the construction of a new Christian Education building at the Longwood Estate in 1966.
For more than a century, Pfeiffer’s Store played a central role in Middle Island and the surrounding communities until it was destroyed by fire in 1971. Nearby, a lake initially known as Corwin’s Pond was renamed “Artist Lake” after painter Alonzo Chappel settled in the area in 1869.
On October 27, 1910, the International Aviation Tournament took place at Belmont Park racetrack in Elmont, New York. The event offered substantial prizes, including rewards for altitude records. Ralph Johnstone set a new American flight altitude record of 8,471 feet during this event.
However, he encountered a gust of wind that forced him to fly backward, ultimately landing near Artist Lake.
Middle Island experienced an influx of Estonian refugees during the 1940s and 1950s, particularly in the Pine Lake area.
According to the 2015 census, Middle Island had a population of 9,702 residents, residing in 3,720 households, with 2,548 families. The population density was approximately 1,175.9 individuals per square mile.
There were 3,900 housing units at an average density of around 472.7 per square mile. In terms of racial composition, the majority, or 85.45%, were White, followed by 7.58% African American, 0.25% Native American, 2.44% Asian, and smaller percentages of other racial backgrounds. Additionally, 6.87% of the population identified as Hispanic or Latino.
Among the households, approximately 31.2% had children under 18 living with them, while 51.0% were composed of married couples living together. About 13.2% of households were headed by a female with no husband present, and 31.5% were non-families. A significant proportion, 23.7%, consisted of individuals living alone, and 6.9% were households with someone aged 65 or older. On average, households had 2.53 members, and families averaged 3.01 members.
In terms of age distribution, approximately 22.5% of the population was under 18, 8.2% were between 18 and 24, 32.6% were between 25 and 44, 22.9% were between 45 and 64, and 13.7% were 65 or older. The median age was 37 years. For every 100 females, there were 90.6 males, and for every 100 females aged 18 and over, there were 86.9 males.
Regarding income, the median household income in Middle Island was $50,818, with families having a median income of $58,171. Among males, the median income was $41,618, while among females, it was $30,516.
