General Guideline Principles for Functional Restoration
Approach to Non-Acute Pain Management
for workers compensation patients

The New York State workers compensation board has developed these guidelines to help physicians, podiatrists, and other healthcare professionals provide appropriate treatment for Functional Restoration Approach to Non-Acute Pain Management.

These Workers Compensation Board guidelines are intended to assist healthcare professionals in making decisions regarding the appropriate level of care for their patients with ankle and foot disorders.

The guidelines are not a substitute for clinical judgement or professional experience. The ultimate decision regarding care must be made by the patient in consultation with his or her healthcare provider.

Functional Restoration Approach to Non-Acute Pain Management of Non-Acute Pain

Most often, pain is self-limited, thus little, if any, treatments may be needed for many wounded employees. Others will experience chronic pain, but it may be controlled with simple measures and doesn’t need for sophisticated medical care.

However, a complete multidisciplinary approach to pain management that is customized, functionally focused (not pain centered), and goal-specific has been demonstrated to be the most successful treatment method for individuals with more complicated or resistant conditions (Flora, Frydrych et al. 1992; Guzman, Esmail et al. 2001; Getchell and Braga 2005). The long-term objective of all types of functional restoration is independent individual.

Medical recovery and disability management are based on the method and concepts of functional restoration, which may be implemented by a doctor or an integrated health care team to a wide range of issues, including non-acute disorders.
