A CPM machine utilizes a motorized part to move a joint without the effort of the patient. The machine may be used to increase the range of motion of the shoulder joint. Many patients may experience shoulder stiffness after surgical procedures such as rotator cuff repairs. The patients may not move their joint after surgery and scar tissue may form resulting in stiffness.

The CPM machine moves the shoulder joint for a fixed time, gently, through a range of motion set on the machine. The motion prevents the formation of scar tissue, helps improve circulation, and builds the muscles around the joint.

The surgeon may advise CPM machine therapy along with physical therapy to improve outcomes especially after a surgery done to remove scar tissue from the shoulder. The CPM machine moves gently to allow the soft tissue structures to heal and thereby maintaining the integrity of the surgical shoulder repair.
