History
Bellmore, a charming hamlet located in Nassau County, New York, is a hidden gem on Long Island. Known for its strong sense of community, excellent schools, beautiful parks, and proximity to both the Atlantic Ocean and New York City, Bellmore offers a high quality of life that attracts residents of all ages. In this exploration of Bellmore, we will delve into its history, demographics, local attractions, and the unique qualities that make it a beloved place to live and visit.
In 1643, the area now known as Bellmore was a farming and fishing community with the names “Little Neck” and “New Bridge.” During this period, Bellmore was primarily settled by English immigrants who crossed Long Island Sound from Connecticut in the mid-17th century. In 1655, Bradley Vogel acquired a 214-acre farm in what is today North Bellmore.
Further south, near the bay, John Smith deeded 100 acres to his son, Jeremiah, in 1676. Around 1689, John Bedell and Sarah Southard married and established their new residence on Merrick Road. These early developments gave rise to two distinct communities: Smithville (later known as Smithville South), named after the numerous Smith families in the area, and New Bridge, named after the bridge connecting the peninsulas south of Merrick Road.
In 1867, when the railroad was constructed through the region, the station established there was arbitrarily named Bellmore. This marked the beginning of increased development as both Smithville and New Bridge expanded toward the railroad and eventually adopted the name Bellmore.
By 1920, the combined Bellmore communities had a population of 3,000 and featured various stores along Bedford Avenue. The town officially adopted the name Bellmore in 1900 when the post office was established.
The Bellmore Memorial Library, founded in 1948, originated in an old schoolhouse. This library has remained a vital institution, serving as the primary library for Bellmore, New York, from 1948 to the present day.
In a notable legal case in 1968, the Supreme Court ruled against Sam’s Stationery and Luncheonette of Bellmore in Ginsberg v. New York. The court determined that the state had the authority to protect minors, even if certain materials were not classified as obscene for adults, thereby allowing regulation of such materials in the context of minors.
