The New York State workers compensation board has developed these guidelines to help physicians, podiatrists, and other healthcare professionals provide appropriate treatment for Electrical Bone Growth Stimulators.
These Workers Compensation Board guidelines are intended to assist healthcare professionals in making decisions regarding the appropriate level of care for their patients with ankle and foot disorders.
The guidelines are not a substitute for clinical judgement or professional experience. The ultimate decision regarding care must be made by the patient in consultation with his or her healthcare provider.
Electrical Bone Growth Stimulators of of Therapeutic Procedures: Operative
The list of pre-authorized procedures does not contain electrical bone growth stimulators. Providers who wish to carry out one of these operations must first submit a pre-authorization request to the carrier.
- Electrical Bone Growth Stimulators of of Therapeutic Procedures: Operative-as an adjunct to spinal fusion surgeryElectrical Bone Growth Stimulators of Therapeutic Procedures: Operative is recommended as an adjunct to spinal fusion surgery for those at high risk for pseudoarthrosis.
Indications: Include one or more of the following fusion failure risk factors:
- One or more failed spinal fusion attempts (s)Â
- Grade II or worse spondylolisthesisÂ
- Fusion will be carried out at multiple levels.Â
- Existence of additional risk factors that could support non-healing:
- Current smokingÂ
- DiabetesÂ
- Renal diseaseÂ
- Other metabolic diseases where bone healing is likely to be compromised (e.g.: significant osteoporosis)Â
- Active alcoholismÂ
- Morbid obesity BMI >40Â
- Electrical Bone Growth Stimulators of of Therapeutic Procedures: Operative- Failed fusionElectrical Bone Growth Stimulators of Therapeutic Procedures are recommended as a course of action for people whose spinal fusion has failed.
Failed spinal fusion is described as a spinal fusion that has not healed at least six months after the initial surgery, as shown by serial x-rays taken over three months in the second half of the six months.
