General Guideline Principles for Roentgenograms (X-RAYS)
for workers compensation patients
The New York State workers compensation board has developed these guidelines to help physicians, podiatrists, and other healthcare professionals provide appropriate treatment for Roentgenograms (X-RAYS).
These Workers Compensation Board guidelines are intended to assist healthcare professionals in making decisions regarding the appropriate level of care for their patients with ankle and foot disorders.
The guidelines are not a substitute for clinical judgement or professional experience. The ultimate decision regarding care must be made by the patient in consultation with his or her healthcare provider.
Roentgenograms (X-RAYS)
X-rays of Roentgenograms for Evaluation of Acute, Subacute, or Chronic Elbow Pain
X-rays of Roentgenograms for Evaluation of Acute, Subacute, or Chronic Elbow Pain are recommended In the majority of cases of elbow pain, X-rays still serve as the initial diagnostic to determine the bony structure. Usually, two or three views are executed.
Indications – Patients with elbow pain that is persistent for at least a few weeks, moderate to severe, and/or limited range of motion should be evaluated for osteomyelitis in cases of substantial septic olecranon bursitis, excluding any warning signs.
Frequency/Duration – One x-ray is typically all that is required. A second series of x-rays may be appropriate to be taken for individuals with chronic or progressive elbow discomfort months or years later to reevaluate their condition, especially if their symptoms alter.
Reason for Recommendations: The majority of patients with elbow pain can benefit from X-ray evaluation, which can help with differential diagnosis options as well as diagnosis.
