History
Dix Hills is a designated area for census purposes (CDP) and a hamlet located on Long Island within the town of Huntington in Suffolk County, New York. According to the 2020 census, the population of Dix Hills was 26,180 residents.
In 1699, early settlers engaged in trade with the Indigenous Secatogue tribe to acquire the land that would later become known as Dix Hills. During the latter part of the 17th century, the Secatogues inhabited the northern portion of this region.
The land was originally referred to as “Dick’s Hills,” with local lore suggesting that the name may have been derived from a Native American named Dick Pechegan, who was likely a member of the Secatogue tribe. Scholar William Wallace Tooker noted that combining the English name “Dick” with the indigenous name “Pechegan” was a common practice during that time.
Tooker explained that Pechegan’s dwelling and cultivated fields in the hilly area led to the adoption of the shortened name “Dix Hills” by 1911. This region primarily served agricultural purposes until after World War II.
During the 1950s, Dix Hills, in conjunction with its neighboring communities Wyandanch and Melville, along with the locality known as Sweet Hollow, considered forming a single village. This proposed village would have been named the “Incorporated Village of Half Hollow Hills,” covering an area of approximately 50 square miles and encompassing the Half Hollow Hills Central School District (CSD 5). However, these plans did not materialize, and these areas remained unincorporated.
Similar proposals resurfaced around 2001 when Dix Hills, Melville, Wheatley Heights, and East Farmingdale (all part of the same school district) explored the possibility of incorporating as a single village. Yet, these plans also failed, and each of these areas continues to exist as unincorporated hamlets to this day.
